Social Justice Group

socialjustice01 250This group offers parishioners practical ways to express their solidarity with those who have less. We strive to live compassionate lives in accord with Catholic Social Teaching (caritas.org.au). We meet once a month for an hour and focus on education, advocacy and assistance.

Education
We inform ourselves and others about important issues. We sponsor social justice lectures and events in the parish relating to peace and justice. At meetings, we learn about and reflect on social justice issues, including, for example, Indigenous spirituality, refugees and asylum seekers and homelessness. We circulate information from various sources, including the Archdiocesan Justice Program and attend events and films related to peace and social justice.

Advocacy
We support and speak up for those society renders powerless. This can involve deputations and letter writing to members of Parliament and signing petitions about, for example, the plight of asylum seekers and the continuing cuts to international aid. We attend the Palm Sunday service at the cathedral and join the Palm Sunday march that follows. We attend the ecumenical ANZAC commemoration at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Assistance
We undertake a small number of projects at local, national and international levels.

Local Project
We deliver foodstuffs collected in parish churches to support the Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project and attend their fundraisers. We befriend asylum seekers living locally.

National Project
Following the installation in our parish churches of message sticks to celebrate the return to country of Mungo Man, we plan to continue to support reconciliation and the recognition of Aboriginal culture in Bayside and beyond.

International Project
We conduct appeals which provide bursaries for six students studying nursing in remote Aitape, PNG. We hold a Christmas stall to sell gifts made by those living in poorer countries and communities.

We can see that much more needs to be done. We welcome your assistance and ideas.
